Hi there,
I've personally been an Intel person all along (though i do have one athlon in a Windows box that functions quite well).
I just replaced my poor aging system with an Intel celeron 1.7ghz
and an i845pebp2 Intel motherboard.
i have been very happy with this configuration.
The board has onboard sound, lan (10/100mbps) and raid support,
as well as support for serial ata drives when they become widely available.
The sata chip is a promice one not yet supported by Linux,
but apparently it will be in 2.6.
Coupled with 256mb ram, and an 80gb maxtor drive with 8mb of cache,
the whole system flies along.
