debian problems

This is confusing...
I went into tasksel and chose the stuff I wanted and didn't select anything
I didn't like xfree86 or any of the languages. but It still wanted to
download gnome, abiword, kde, just to name a few.
what I'm thinking is it's just downloading these but not installing them or
something?
