Another thing to try is wiggling the headphone jack around.  Sometimes,
those jacks get bad and will always partially or completely cut out the
speaker's output.  If wiggling it around causes the speaker's volume to
jump up and down, you know that's the problem.  As long as you don't use
the line-in of the sound card for anything, connecting the output to it
should be no problem.
