Ok, yes, you are correct to asume that it can auto-detect, in most cases,
where the synthesiser is.
However, I think I know what your problem is.
You missed a bit in your typing, what you should have typed at the prompt
was:
linux speakup_synth=dectlk
Hopefully you should find that that works fine.
