yYeah I read the ftape-howto but nothing useful in there. I loaded the
module but nothing wants to access my tape drive. I think maybe it's
not set in bios correctly or something.
and for some weird reason the latest ftape source wont compile.
the errors it gives were

ftape_syms.c:117:24: warning: pasting "(" and "ftape_trace_log" does
not give a
valid preprocessing token
ftape_syms.c:118:23: warning: pasting "(" and "ftape_tracings" does
not give a valid preprocessing token
ftape_syms.c:119:35: warning: pasting "(" and
"ftape_function_nest_levels" does
not give a valid preprocessing token
make[2]: *** [ftape_syms.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/ftape-4.04/ftape/lowlevel'
make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2
