linux 2.4.22 locks up my box as well

I've had a few of what may be lock ups but none of them happened during or
shortly after boot up.  I'll cycle the speech synthesizer the next time
that happens before starting everything over and see if I can clear the
lock up.  We've had power problems in this area that were very bad
recently in this region, so that may go toward explaining them too.
This is version 2.4.20 unmodified slackware 9_0 with speakup patch.
