Hi Igor. You probably just need to turn your capture volume up and
unmute it. Your mic volume has to be turned up, and captured also. You
didn't say which sound card you are using, so I can't be more specific.
There are lots of folks using Alsa 0.9 with Speak Freely. The
differences between rc1 and rc2 are bug fixes. If you don't get rc1 to
work, upgrade to rc2.

While I'm on the subject, you shouldn't have to do anything to Speak
Freely in order to use it. Just compile it as is, out of the tar ball.
Don't forget that when you actually connect to a reflecter, you will
need to run two copies of sfspeaker. The first will use the standard
2074-2076 ports. The second copy needs the -p4074 option because this
is the port that the reflecter receives and sends on by default. So if
you were to write a simple script to connect to the speakup reflecter,
it might look something like the one I use:

#!/bin/bash
SPEAKFREE_LWL_TELL=129.100.109.61
SPEAKFREE_ID="Gene Collins:collins at iastate.edu:(515) 294-0015:Ames, Iowa, U.S."
SPEAKFREE_CNAME=gene3.ait.iastate.edu
SPEAKFREE_LWL_HTML=/speakup.html
export SPEAKFREE_LWL_TELL
export SPEAKFREE_ID
export SPEAKFREE_CNAME
./sfspeaker  -p4074 &
./sfspeaker -b -a/home/collins/resp &
stty ixon ixoff
./sfmike 129.100.109.61:4074
stty -ixon -ixoff
killall -9 sfspeaker

If you decide to use this script, don't forget to edit it so it contains
your personal information, email address, domain name, etc. Have fun!
