getting rid of popping sounds in recordings

Hi all.

I know that there are somewhat expensive and from what I've heard somewhat buggy tools that allow one to get rid of popping sounds like those found on old records when recording the records in question as a wave or mp3 or ogg/vorbis file in windblows. Are there any tools that can do this in GNU/Linux? Can sox do this? Thanks in advance.
