temporary serial console

Hi all,

I know that you can setup init to spawn a serial console, just like any other console. What I'm wondering is if it is possible for me to setup a serial console for use at certain times, instead of all the time. Basically, what I would like is the ability to at times have a serial console, and to use my serial port for other things at other times. Can this be done? Thanks.
