networking problems

I'm trying to  network my laptop and desktop so that my life will be much
easier with some things.

The problem I'm having is this.I'm using dhcp so that the desktop can pull
an ip adress from the cable modem. I installed dhcpd, and am trying to
configure it, but 1 don't fully understand the manpages, and 2 I don't
fully understand the config file. I took a lot of guesses at it, but my
laptop still can't connect to the internet.

The laptop is fine when it's connected to the modem by itself, so my guess
is that the problem is with my desktop.

If someone can please help me with this I would appreciate it.
