amixer with sblive value

Ed, it would depend on what distribution you are running.  However in 
Redhat I do this:
chkconfig alsasound --levels 2345 on
This makes sure that the alsasound script is executed if you enter any 
of the run levels 2 through 5 upon start up.  By the way the chkconfig 
command is extremely useful for disabling unwanted services:
chkconfig gpm --levels 0123456 off

And you will never have to worry about that irritating message from gpm 
stating that it can't find /dev/mouse when you reboot again!
