Thank you very much for your speedy replies.

I was able to change drives, and use the 'fdisk /mbr' command to clear
LILO from the master boot record.

Boot from a windows startup disk and run the following command multiple
times (5 or 6): fdisk /mbr

For some strange reason the m$ utilities for this kind of thing fail to
overwrite the boot block. I wonder if this is related to the fact that
the partition table for m$ ignores the first 500 bytes or so of the
partition. At any rate, this will resolve your problem.
