Mandrake 8.1 distro

[Ron Marriage]

Downloaded a new kernel from kernel.org and installed it.  
kernel 2.4.17
Did, make mrproper, make config, make dep, make bzImage,
make modules, make modules install.
I copied /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage to
/boot/vmlinuz
I copied the speakup map to /boot
Didn't get any errors durring any steps.

I rebooted and the system started talking but ended with 

unknown bridge resource 0: assuming transparent
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:06

anyone have a suggestion
