changing to frame buffers

I hope somebody has a few magic words of advice for me on this
one:
When I first installed this Slackware 8.0 distribution I had the
opportunity to choose between a standard console display and
frame buffers. I chose the standard option. Now I wish I had
chosen frame buffers, and cannot figure out how to change my
;mind. I have read most of the available docs, but apparently not
the right one yet. I seem to recall that I made that choice when
running the lilo configuration part of the installation
procedure, but liloconfig no longer gives me any choices about
frame buffers. I ran through my kernel configuration choices and
find no mention there either of frame buffers (2.2.19). My
lilo.conf file contains a long list of comment lines that appear
to let me make that choice, but I am nervous about uncommenting
any of them without someone holding my hand or giving me
permission!
Any help or advice about how to do it, or what to read, will be
greatly appreciated.
Chuck
