Yes, it is 2.4.18 but keep in mind that the version matching option is
turned on for modules and What I recall in one case was the actual
version number was something like 2.4.18-bf or something like that.
When I used a slack box to compile kernels with Debians config, I
still ran into a bunch of module compatibility issues when trying to
'modprobe' my network drivers and just about everything else too.

At least once I used a 2.2.20 kernel I compiled, the install kernel
and drivers step in the debian installer began to work properly and
find the stuff it needed.  I couldn't get a 2.4.18 kernel to do that;
probably because I didn't match the exact version number/name.

Let us know how you come out on this.  I gave up and fell back to
slackware because I was anxious to get that box up and running with
something again:).
