a couple of questions about kernel 2.4.18

What some of us do is simply edit the file /etc/issue to place a
bell character in it somewhere. On Slackware 8.x systems that
file contains the "welcome" message associated with the login
prompt. But it is always nice to have one more way to skin a cat.
