Hi all,

Rob, yes, it can get confusing.  A distribution is a slightly
different kernel program in Linux from another.  All distros have
virtually the same info, but some use it in ways which are better for
the blind than others.  Debian, e.g., is easier to configure and to
install eyes-free.  Red Hat is fine too, but its installation program
is more graphical and may require sighted help.  Debian's package
system for installing new programs is really spiffy!  

No, you do not need a different speech program depending on the distro
you use, it depends on the synth you use.
