Ther is an easier and better way. 1. Move /usr/src/linux to /usr/src/linux-x.y.z where x, y, and z is the original kernel version. 2. Unpack the new kernel which will unpack by default into /usr/src/linux. 3. Move that new version to linux-x.y.z where x, y, and z is the new version number.
