using cvs from slackware 8.0

Hi gang.  Slackware 8.0 includes cvs1.11.1p1 and when I try to use the
downloaded checkout script from bumpy I get an error saying .cvspass does
not exist so it will not let me patch speakup.  This seems totally on my
end because it's my cvs client that is giving this error.  I looked in man
pages to see the format of a .cvspass file but I can't find it.  I imagine
I need to create one and put in the please password in there or something.
Anyone else try this with this cvs client/server?
