Well, the client doesn't matter much, so if there's something you're used
to using on a shell or other unix setup then you can probably go right on
using it.  I've been using pine for 6 years, so I use that.

Fetchmail is a good way to deal with pulling down mail from a dialup
ISP.  I also use this here.  Configuring it is pretty straight-forward once
you know how.

The mail transport question is quite a vexing one.  It seems a lot of
slackwarers up here use sendmail.  I use exim on debian and I think that's
now the debian default.  Either way, you should be able to get help from
folks up here or on the reflector if you get stuck.  Configuring mail
transport agents can be a bit of a fiddle until you actually get it
working.  I STRONGLY recommend setting up your MTA before getting fetchmail
up and running, for 2 reasons.  Firstly, you won't be able to reply until
you do this, and secondly, fetchmail uses your MTA to actually deliver your
mail to you, so you need it to be working first.
