delaytime of litetalk driver

I've tried various values of delaytime for the litetalk driver, and
haven't come up with a setting which works consistantly. A value of 1
seems to give the best response, but characters are still sometimes
dropped. This dropping of the first character happens both before and
after the doubletalk LT stops transmitting.
Even with this setting for delaytime, commands for rate and pitch and such
are still bleeding through, (the ^A is dropped) but something like:
echo "z\x019s" > /proc/speakup/litetalk/direct
will set the rate to 9 without any problems (since the z is dropped)
Much thanks to Jim and Frank for your assistance a few days ago.
Chris
