Speakup 0.10 parms

I got speakup 0.10 up and running with my speakout and I like those
/proc/speakup parameters.  I do have one question though.  I would like to
add some letters to the tone value range as for the speakout A through Z
are valid.  I wanted to use J but speakup says that is out of range.  Is
there any reason we can't expand this range?  If I want to do it for
myself, where do I make the changes?

BTW, I can't seem to send control chars by echoing them from the shell to
/proc/speakup/speakout/direct.
