It is the price of progress. Here are some stats to consider.
Serial Port:
	Uses 1 IRQ that can't be shared
	Supports 1 device with very limited speed
USB Port:
	Uses 1 IRQ for 2 busses and shares well
	Supports 128 devices with a buad rate more then double the 
	venerable serial port. 
So it is clear that the USB port is a much more efficient solution for
many problems. Perhaps the solution is to trick the system and use the
mouse and/or keyboard support built into the bios to talk over the USB
until further into the boot cycle.

Keep in mind that full implimentation allows for the keyboard and mouse to
be available before system boot.
