Pardon my ignorance, but isn't all the information required to patch
manually already present in the script? If one is feeling like doing it by
hand, doesn't one simply read the script to discover the appropriate
sequence of commands to type?

What was that spaghetti sauce commercial? Something like: "It's already in
there!"
