What is missing?

Hmmm, this sounds a bit weird.  What did you answer to the include
speakup map question when configuring the kernel?  Also, seeing a copy
of the errors from the compile output would be useful.  Do you
remember seeing any patch errors when running the checkout script.
You sould get no patch errors on the 2.4.x series kernels.  BTW, 2.4.8
was released yesterday which handles virtual memory a tad better than
2.4.7.
