MICROSOFT HIT BY CODE RED

Posted at August 09, 2001 07:18 AM Pacific

PROVING AGAIN THAT it doesn't practice what it
preaches, Microsoft on Thursday confirmed that the
Code Red worm infected two servers used for its
Hotmail Web-based e-mail service.

"A few MSN Hotmail servers were affected by the Code
Red worm virus. The servers were promptly removed from
the MSN Hotmail environment, shut down, and patched,"
said a Microsoft spokeswoman in the United Kingdom,
adding that the infection was detected late Wednesday
afternoon in the United States.

EVENT MARKS 20 YEARS OF THE PC

Posted at August 09, 2001 03:27 AM Pacific

A HINT OF nostalgia hit the high-tech world Wednesday
night, as many of the luminaries that drove the PC's
success gathered to honor the 20th anniversary of the
world-changing machine.

Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect at
Microsoft, led the list of PC dignitaries who gathered
to echo a similar message: The PC will own a prominent
place in computing for some time to come.

MICROSOFT APPEAL GETS NO RESPECT

Posted at August 09, 2001 02:33 AM Pacific

MICROSOFT'S U.S. SUPREME Court filing is getting little
respect from legal experts, who said it's unlikely to
derail any threat of legal action by the government
against the Windows XP operating system due to be sent
to PC makers later this month.

In legal papers filed Tuesday, Microsoft asked the high
court to throw out the lower court's rulings because
of critical comments about the company made to
reporters by trial Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson. The
company also asked the U.S. Court of Appeals to halt
the transfer of the case to the U.S. District Court
for a hearing on remedies. That transfer is due to
take place on Friday, when a new judge could be
selected to take over the case.

HEALTH GROUPS PUSH HHS FOR QUICK HIPAA CHANGES

Posted at August 09, 2001 02:24 AM Pacific

APPROXIMATELY 80 HEALTH care groups sent a letter this
week urging U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson to make quick
changes to privacy rules that the department finalized
in April.

Organizations including the Chicago-based American
Hospital Association (AHA) and the American Medical
Association urged the department to "move as
expeditiously as possible to make modifications" to
the privacy regulations, known as the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

"What we are doing now I compare to the government's 'Best
of Breed' approach of the 1990s but with a little Viagra
added in."

--Mark Forman, director of IT and e-government within the
Bush administration's Office of Management and Budget,
explains to InfoWorld Senior Editor Jennifer Jones how the
current fed-wide IT revamp enhances an earlier policy.
