Try looking into jabber, http://www.jabber.org, which is an instant
messenging system that provides access to ICQ/MSN/Yahoo and others.
Their is a console client called sjabber which is at
http://www.pipetree.com/jabber/sjabber/ I haven't set it up, but from
the docs it looks promising.
