pdf_sec.ps patch

Hi all,

I'm trying to convert a pdf file into a ps file. I plan to then convert the ps file into ascii so I can read it. When I run pdf2ps, it tells me that the pdf file is encrypted, and I should download a patch. I got the patch it mentioned. However, when I do 'gs pdf_sec.ps', gs says that it can't open an x display. How do I apply the patch? Is there a better way to read pdf files in linux? Thanks.
