network configuration problem

I just took the speakup ones, the ones off the ftp site. I'm sure it may
have been buggy because of how things may have downloaded. I bet that
install was the remnants of 2.1 mixed with the frozen base system. I'm not
real sure which images I had chosen, but I got my own kernel from taking
.config from the kernel-image-2.2.15 and patching speakup in, but didn't
know what to turn off to shrink kernel size, as the compile claimed a
bigger than 560 or whatever limit k on the size.
