To correct a buggy install, you really should back up your data and start
over. Clean the slate (format the drive) and install fresh. I just
installed Debian and you can install with defaults minus X. Give me your
address and I will even send a CD to you for use. Then you should only
need the boot and root disks. I am sure someone here can help make sure
you have the right images for those.
