best way to install linux to a laptop

Buddy.  You don't need the base tarball.  It's on the cd.  You can mount
the cd with all of the tools on the root disk.  If you are conserned about
the keymap that's a pretty easy thing to fix.  For some of us the 15m
download is a lot.
