installed rh 6.2 from talking bootdisk, but it's kernel refuses to work properly when copied in from the bootdisk

Your not 8-bit clean messages come from a broken chat script. You aren't doing
the chat script correctly enough to get you onto the isp. sadly 90% ofppp problems
related to ppp not working are user generated.
