APPLE PARTNERS WITH REALNETWORKS

Posted at Jun 12, 2000 03:02 PM Pacific

REALNETWORKS WILL LICENSE technology from Apple
Computer for streaming audio and video content over
the Web, and support Apple's QuickTime format in its
RealServer 8 software product, officials at the
companies announced Monday.

The licensing deal means that content providers who use
RealServer will be able to distribute audio and video
that can be played back by users who have installed
Apple's QuickTime player, RealNetworks officials said.

TOP TALENT TACKLES INTERNET INFRASTRUCTURE

Posted at Jun 12, 2000 02:52 PM Pacific

JUDY ESTRIN -- who stepped down from her post as CTO of
Cisco in April, along with her husband and a team of
top technologists -- on Monday announced the formation
of a new company focused on solving Internet
infrastructure challenges such as
scalability and ease of use.

Packet Design's mission is to develop IP technologies
to enhance the performance, scalability, and
ease-of-use of the existing Internet infrastructure.
Estrin said key design criteria behind IP -- openness,
disturbed architecture, and the fact that applications
run independently of the infrastructure -- have
allowed the Internet to go through explosive growth.

IBM FURTHER BOOSTS LINUX

Posted at Jun 12, 2000 10:55 AM Pacific

A GREATER NUMBER of IBM's servers, laptops, and
desktops will now come with the Linux operating
system, company officials said Monday.

"There appears to be enormous demand in the marketplace
[for Linux]," said Buell Duncan, general manager of
IBM global business partners. "It comes back to
e-business. As e-business is taking off, much of the
application development is being done on Linux. We
want to be there early and stronger than anyone else."

HELP WANTED IN IT

Posted at Jun 12, 2000 09:58 AM Pacific

TAIPEI, TAIWAN -- Eliot Norman, a Richmond, Va.-based
immigration attorney, arrived here this weekend for
the World Congress on Information Technology but like
many of the 1,300 attendees, he did not come for the
scheduled speeches by people such as Microsoft
Chairman Bill Gates. Norman
was there to drum up business.

"I'm prospecting," said Norman, who is searching out
foreign companies that can help his U.S. clients with
their high-tech worker needs or do offshore software
development. His clients need both.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

"...this is striking new thinking. It's small and powerful
and very flexible. This is a competitor to Linux and Unix,
but what may be a problem is that it doesn't have the
commercial development tools, database products,
applications, middleware, or serverware that the other
platforms now have."

--Dan Kusnetzky, vice president for systems software
research at IDC, speaking about Plan 9.
