The xorg.conf file will be of no help by now. That file was already
confirmed as normal and was able to run another debian user's xserver when
they edited it for their own installation (their equipment isn't identical
to mine). I found out all the paths to the font files are correct too.
What doesn't yet exist though is the /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/fonts.alias
file. Once that's created correctly I may well be in operation over here
(knock on wood). For some reason a tasksel installation didn't create this
file and put it in the right place either. I have some email to write to
the people over at http://wiki.X.org/ too. Their writing on error faqs
has inconsistencies in it that are unnecessary.
