No speech after loading speakup_ltlk

Is there something new wrt loading speakup modules? I have a new install 
of debian stretch. I can load the speakup_ltlk module but I get no 
speech. The lsmod command shows that the module loaded successfully. 
There is nothing in the syslog except the warning that the module is 
from the staging area.


I know my hardware synth is connected and working because I can echo a 
word to /dev/ttyS0 and it speaks the word.
