problems using hardware synth on 3.18 kernel

Hi.  I am having a problem using a hardware synth on a 3.18.3 kernel --
apparently speakup is not getting the 3f8 address -- it says all zero's
instead and therefore I get no speech.  Anyone have a clue what they
did?  It does work on 3.16.3.
