I think I have a solution to most of the slow GNOME problem. I do seem
to recall that an indexing tool called Tracker caused some initial
slowdowns when I had a slower machine. Uninstalling this may help get
things working quite a bit faster, and it shouldn't take anything
important with it as it leaves your system. Hope it helps.
