all,
I am sharing this much as others share surveys. There are many Canadians
on these lists, and those who do business with Canada. Likewise it is
critical that they get reviews from those using various platforms, Linux
and mac included.
please help if you can, or share if you cannot.
I personally attended one of these hearings, and I assure you that the
judge in this case is absolutely firm on making the Canadian government do
their job.
Thanks,
Karen

Subject: Urgent: IS THE GOVERNMENT COMPLYING WITH ITS NEW STANDARD ON WEB
ACCESSIBILITY?
Hello Trailblazers:
This is an urgent request from the Alliance for Equality of Blind
Canadians(AEBC). Please read below. We would like to have all Federal
government websites checked by blind, deaf-blind and partially sighted
individuals to see if the government has made the websites accessible or in
the process or has not been done. Another Committee member is organizing
distribution of Federal government websites to everyone so, that we can get
each website covered in the short time that is requested. Also, please send
to all blind, deaf-blind and partially sighted individuals and
organizations. The website reports need to be e-mailed to Bakerlaw and Pat
Seed(AEBC) no later than February 27, 2012 For processing.
Please send your request to Pat Seed at pat.seed at tbaytel.net. If you do not
have a particular website you would like to review then Pat will assign you
one or as many as you would like to work on. When you have reviewed the
website, please answer the questions from the lawyer below and then send it
along to:
Luz Sucilan at
lsucilan at bakerlaw.ca
and also copy the same to:
Pat Seed at
pat.seed at tbaytel.net
If you do not want websites assigned, do as many as you can and answer the
questions below. E-mail to the same e-mail addresses above.
When asking for a website or sending your results to the above e-mails,
please put in the subject line: Website accessibility report. This is for
tracking purposes.
Thank you for your assistance in this very important cause for one and all
blind individuals. This is for you.
Sincerely,
Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians(AEBC)
Charter Challenge Committee

IS THE Federal GOVERNMENT COMPLYING WITH ITS NEW STANDARD ON WEB
ACCESSIBILITY? HELP US FIND OUT!
On November 29, 2010 the Federal Court of Canada released a landmark
decision concerning the rights of Canadians with disabilities to access
Federal government websites.
Justice Kelen declared that Donna Jodhan's inability to access certain
Federal government websites is representative of a system wide failure by
government departments and agencies to make their websites accessible, and
that the government's failure to monitor and ensure compliance with its own
accessibility standards violates the equality guarantee in the Charter. He
declared that the government has a constitutional obligation to bring itself
into compliance with the Charter within a "reasonable time period, such as
15 months." If the government is not complying, Justice Kelen indicated Ms.
Jodhan can apply to him for further specific directions to the government.
Following the Court's decision, the government released a new Standard on
Web Accessibility which adopts WCAG 2.0
(http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pol/doc-eng.aspx?id=23601
<http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pol/doc-eng.aspx?id=23601§ion=text>
§ion=text). The Standard has a multi-phase implementation deadline.
Phase I includes all web site home pages and pages referenced from web site
home pages of all 107 federal government departments and agencies listed in
Schedule I, I.1 and II of the Financial Administration Act.
We are asking for your help to determine whether the Federal government is
complying with its new Standard. If you want to help, here is what you can
do:
By February 29, 2012, please visit the web site home page, or a page
referenced from the web site home page of one or more of the 107 government
departments and agencies listed below. Try as many as you can so we know if
the government is complying.
Let us know if the web page is accessible or not by completing the
Accessibility Report Form below and emailing it to Luz Sucilan at
lsucilan at bakerlaw.ca. By filling in the form each time you hit a barrier or
gain access, you will help us determine if the government is living up to
its Charter obligations to you. Give us the information we need to secure
court ordered website access if it is not, and to call for a national
celebration if it is.
