When I was experimenting with it a few days ago, I didn't need a lot of cd's.  I just used 1.  It was the 
talkiing installer from 

http://www.debian.org/devel/

and it had the information it needed on it to set up everything.  I guess it would pull in packages from the 
network to get the ones you needed.  Then you wouldn't have to have all those discs.  

I only have to say that it will take a very long time to do unless you replace your dsl modem before doing 
it, but it should work.
