slackware 13.37 and litetalk synthesizer question

Has anyone had success installing slackware 13.37 using a litetalk speech 
synthesizer?  I tried:
speakup.s speakup.synth=ltlk speakup.ser=0 and got no speech.  Might there 
be anything else to try?  I got the DVD version and tried installing the 
x86 version on an amd athelon k8 machine.  This wasn't a problem with past 
slackware versions either.
