Speakup and apollo not working with kernel 2.6.39 on archlinux

Hello,
My archlinux system was upgraded to kernel 2.6.39 but now speakup and my 
apollo does not work. When I boot the system the speakup_apollo module 
is not loaded and when I use modprobe to load the module the module is 
not loaded and modprobe does not return me to the shell prompt (I can 
stop it with control+c).

I seem to get the same result if I try and load the speakup_soft module, 
so may be it isn't apollo specific.
