Well, I hate to tell you this, but the change to your boot script will be
lost on upgrade.  If you read the README, it clearly states not to modify
scripts in /etc/init.d because they will be upgraded when new packages are
installed.  What he edited was a symlink to /etc/init.d.  If reading the
documentation in /usr/share/doc/console-setup and reconfiguring the package
won't help, file a bug.  It sounds like that might be a bug anyway, but I'm
not familiar enough with the package to say.

Also, I understand the reasoning behind still using lilo, but I think the
reason why console-setup works the way it does is because it expects grub or
grub2 to be installed.  You can set your video mode there and shouldn't need
to change console-setup at all.  That's only a guess, I don't know for sure.
