Speakup on Debian "Lenny"

Espeakup built and installed.
/usr/bin/espeakup added to /etc/rc.local and speakup_soft added to
/etc/modules.

I'm still working over ssh.
It seems that the kernel have already loaded the soundcard modules.
I can see them with lsmod.
But what about the channels?
Are all muted by default?
Do I need to install alsa-utils and unmute the channels with alsamixer?
