The "creators" of UTF-8 were Ken Thompson and Rob Pike, both formerly
employed by Bell Labs
They work for Google now.
If you don't recognize the names, Ken Thompson was one of the creators of
Unix.
Yes, UTF-8 is a good thing for a few reasons, and it is a superset of ASCII.
