building as external modules

Hi,

I'm running ubuntu 8.10, and it seems the speakup-source modules package
won't compile with 2.6.27, so I'm trying to build as external modules
from git.

But I don't understand this line:
Make sure that /lib/modules/kernelversion/build points to the location
of a full build of the kernel. 

So is this just a full kernel source, or kernel headers? Or something
else? If I'm running 2.6.27-15 on ubuntu, what could be an example path
for this?
