speakup fails to compile under karmic

Hi all,
the command I gave:
make KERNELDIR=/lib/modules/2.6.31-4-generic/build should have compiled 
external modules for that kernel.  I will be testing the vanilla sources 
today to see if I get the same errors.  Thanks for bringing up the 
built-in case, I can try that too and tell how it goes.
