Uptime and w failing to report correct info?

Hi All,
I'm curious as to why uptime and w both seem to think there are more
users on my system than actually are logged in.  The actual time
callculation seems accurate. 
I'm running archlinux with Speakup.  As far as I'm concerned everything
else on this system works as expected.  I'm just wondering about this
tiny inconsistency.
I've read up on utmp and wtmp, but don't know what programs besides the
login program might have cause to mess with them.  
Any info would be appreciated.
