Hi James...
Sorry you couldn't get the skype plugin to work. There's nothing wrong with using 2 operatiing systems. I mostly use Ubuntu because it's a much better operating system than windows but when I need to scan text I use windows because I can't find decent OCR software for Linux.
I have never installed speakup but I noticed that no one responded to your email yet so I did a few google searches for you. By typing "how do you install speakup for ubuntu" I found some nice articles including this one. Click on the link to go to it. http://sites.skaccess.com/speakup/guide/patch-and-compile-kernel I also googled "speakup software synthesizer" and found this article .http://www.freebsoft.org/doc/speechd-up/speechd-up_1.html I am sure there are many more articles on the net. I hope this helps.
Charlie

Hello. My name is James and I have just joined ths list. I hope I will learn a
lot and hopefully contribute in time.
Am I correct in thinking that there is a software synthesizer for Speak UP and
that you can have both Speak Up and Orca running on the same system? If so, how
would I go about installing Speak Up in Ubuntu and does this mean that I could
have speech at start up and in every part of Linux with both Screen Readers?
Thanks
James
