speakout does not always shut up

Hi.  I am using the git speakup as of October 26 which is the latest
-- git pull says already up to date which kernel 2.6.27-gentoo-r4 and
at times my speakout will not shut up -- pressing control or enter on
the keypad has no effect.  It only lasts for about 20 seconds, but is
very annoying.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
