command line ftp client

Terry and all,
I notice that nobody has mentioned the default ftp client, ftp, and I
am curious why not. I have been getting along pretty well with it, but
maybe I haven't pushed its limits or discovered its limitations. Why
lsftp, or ncftp, or zftp, instead of the plain old vanilla ftp?
